“George is a first-time dad and to see him play with our son is one of the joys of my life. I think it’s helped him get in touch with his goofiness which has been really refreshing… We’ve had a lot of ups and downs in our relationship because of problems he’s had due to his injuries. I don’t think anything could’ve prepared me for knowing the full scope of how his injuries affect him day to day.”
Laura Daniero and George Nickel met while both were serving in the United States Army. Years later, Laura learned that PTSD had landed George in prison in Idaho. She came to visit him and rekindled their friendship. A few years after George was released, they married.
Laura says, “When I first came back into George’s life I knew what PTSD was but I was very naïve about what it all entailed.” Over time and with the support of many including the Wyakin Foundation, George obtained a Masters in counseling and now works with the Wyakin Foundation to help wounded and injured combat veterans return to a successful civilian life through education, development and guidance.
You will hear Laura’s story and get to know her more fully in I Married the War.
